How to tell if a fragrance is genuine

These days counterfeit fragrances have exactly the same designers name, almost identical bottles, labels, boxes and very similar scents!  It's estimated that up to 10% of perfumes and toiletries in the market place are counterfeit.  Counterfeit fragrances do NOT last as long, generally only an hour or two instead of half a day or longer, counterfeit fragrances and toiletries deprive the copyright owner of money that can be used to fund new fragrances and toiletries.  People may also loss there jobs due to counterfeits.

Health risks

Counterfeit fragrances do not undergo the usual safety standards that are applied to genuine cosmetics and toiletries.  When inferior ingredients are used, these fragrances may cause skin rashes in people with sensitive skin, they may also cause respiratory problems and could also stain garments.

Old and stale perfume

Fragrances do deteriorate.  The time period depends on temperature, light and length of storage. Sometimes when fragrances are NOT FRESH or stores close down, the stock is cleared out.  These typically end up in auctions, discount shops and some web sites at very cheap prices.  Don't get caught, make sure your supplier sells FRESH fragrances.

Tips on buying your perfume

  1. Buy from a reputable seller that has been in business for some time and has an ABN number.
  2. Be suspicious about bargains.  If a fragrance or cosmetic is too cheap, it may be a fake or old.
  3. Take extra care at car boot sales, pubs, markets or in other situations where it can be more difficult to get in touch with the seller after the purchase.
  4. Ensure that the seller guarantees the fragrance is 100% original and has return policy.
  5. Ensure that the seller guarantees the fragrance is FRESH.
  6. On Ebay, check the sellers feedback, if the seller has bad feedback this could mean problems with your purchase.
  7. On Ebay, check if the seller is PayPal verified.  Sellers of counterfeit products are afraid to disclose their contact information to PayPal.  If the seller is PayPal verified PayPal has completed the necessary steps to ensure that the seller provided the right address.
  8. On Ebay, be careful of sellers that you have never purchased from sending you unsolicited emails offering you the cheapest genuine fragrances and cosmetics often from overseas destinations.

A Few things to look out for when buying your perfume

  1. Fragrance Consistency - Should be transparent and clear and color should be consistent.  The fragrance should not be overly oily.
  2. Fragrance smell - Should not be bitter or sour and should smell fresh.
  3. Skin reactions - Should not make your skin itchy or create rashes.
  4. Box - The color should be identical and the cardboard good quality.
  5. Printing - Should have correct information, including spelling, logo and print style.
  6. Bottle - There should be no air bubbles in the glass and the moulding marks should be even. Fake perfume bottles are generally poor quality compared to the genuine bottles.
  7. Bottle label - Should be positioned correctly and contain correct spelling, print style, logo and trademark.
